The Assistant Town Solicitor reports to the Town Solicitor and provides legal services and advice to Town staff and Council on municipal and planning law matters, including litigation representation, document drafting, and legal opinions.
Key Responsibilities
Provide timely and strategic legal services and advice on municipal and planning law to Town staff and Council
Represent the Town in arbitrations, mediations, and litigation before courts and administrative tribunals, including the Ontario Land Tribunal
Negotiate and draft legal documents reflecting applicable policies
Develop legal strategies, conduct legal research, and prepare legal arguments and opinions
Act as instructing counsel to external solicitors and work with multi-disciplinary groups on municipal service delivery
Qualifications
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) and qualified to practice law in Ontario
Member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada with minimum 8 years' experience in municipal and planning and development law
Experience providing legal services to municipal or public sector clients
Experience negotiating, drafting, and providing counsel on agreements and by-laws
Valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver's License Class G minimum and ability to supply own personal vehicle for job duties
