Associate Legal Counsel provides legal services to City of Ottawa departments, elected officials, and boards in areas including municipal law, planning and development, employment law, civil litigation, real estate, and administrative law. Reports to senior legal counsel and mentors junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal services in planning and development law, environmental law, employment law, contract law, civil litigation, real estate, and administrative law
Represent the City before courts, administrative tribunals, and the Ontario Municipal Board
Provide legal opinions and policy advice to assigned client groups
Mentor and provide guidance to junior Legal Counsel, Articling Law Students, and Paralegals/Law Clerks
Draft legal documents including by-laws, contracts, opinions, reports, and submissions
Qualifications
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
Minimum 2 years of broad legal experience in municipal law practice
Licensed by Law Society of Ontario and called to the Bar of Ontario
Knowledge of the Municipal Act 2001 and Code of Professional Conduct
Working knowledge of civil procedures and practice before courts and administrative tribunals
