The Building Code Engineer makes independent technical interpretations and decisions on behalf of the Chief Building Official regarding Vancouver's Building and Fire By-laws for permitting. The role oversees the sprinkler permit process, reviews complex fire protection projects, and supervises Project Coordinators.
Key Responsibilities
- Authorize sprinkler and building permit issuance in compliance with Building By-law and NFPA standards
- Manage sprinkler permit applications and conduct technical review of complex projects
- Interpret and apply Building By-law and Fire By-law intent to projects; resolve questions from Professional Engineers and applicants
- Supervise and mentor Project Coordinators; provide technical guidance and authorize their permit issuance
- Advise Chief Building Official on policy and code issues; complete occasional building and site inspections
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil, Fire Protection or Mechanical Engineering with registration or eligibility as Professional Engineer in BC
- Considerable experience in plans examination and interpretation of Building By-law, Fire By-law, BC Building Code, and NFPA standards
- Leadership, mentoring and supervisory experience
- Superior verbal and written communications skills
- Familiarity with building design, materials, and fire protection measures for high buildings
