The City of Vancouver seeks a Chief Building Official to lead its building regulatory framework and oversee a large, diverse organization of professional, technical, and inspection staff. This executive leadership role reports to the General Manager, Development, Buildings and Licensing, and requires overseeing building, plumbing, gas, and electrical inspections, policy development, and regulatory compliance while working with senior civic leaders and industry stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee Vancouver's building regulatory framework and ensure public safety
  • Lead large, diverse organization of professional, technical, and inspection staff
  • Oversee teams responsible for building, plumbing, gas, and electrical inspections
  • Direct building policy development, alternative solutions, and regulatory compliance
  • Work closely with senior civic leaders, industry stakeholders, professional associations, and government partners

Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering or Architecture and eligibility for professional registration in British Columbia
  • Extensive experience in building regulation, construction, code administration, inspections, permitting, or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively senior leadership experience with large, complex teams and operations
  • Demonstrated success leading unionized and non-unionized workforces, regulatory programs, policy development, and organizational change
  • Expert knowledge of National Building Code, BC Building Code, Vancouver Building By-law, and building regulatory practices
