The Community Youth Worker plans, develops, coordinates, and implements community-based youth services programs for ages 5–18 in partnership with site staff and community members. The role combines direct youth development work with community outreach and carries supervisory and citywide leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, coordinate, promote and implement community-based youth services programs in partnership with site staff and community members
  • Provide direct support to youth and families including advocacy, crisis intervention, and referral services to meet basic needs
  • Develop and implement programs in health, fitness, sports, arts, culture, and social skills, including day camps and playground leader programs
  • Train, mentor, schedule, and supervise volunteers and Program Assistants to ensure quality and safe programming
  • Build partnerships with service providers and community agencies; work collaboratively to address systemic youth issues and connect youth to decision-making structures

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary graduation from a recognized program in child and youth care, social services or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Considerable knowledge of planned youth community recreation and culture programs philosophy and objectives
  • Considerable knowledge of working with youth in care, substance use issues, criminal justice and social welfare systems
  • Considerable knowledge of establishing and maintaining rapport with youth and creating youth leadership opportunities
  • Working knowledge of standard casework techniques and their application to behavioural, social and family issues related to youth
