Deputy City Solicitor reporting to the Director of Legal Services, leading the Real Estate, Planning & Development Law Section. The role combines people leadership, legal expertise and strategic business leadership, providing counsel on complex planning, development and real estate matters while managing a team of lawyers, law clerks and legal assistants.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, mentor and support a team of lawyers, law clerks and legal assistants in a high-performing work environment
Provide strategic legal advice and representation on planning, development, real estate and Ontario Land Tribunal matters
Advise senior leadership, Council and City staff on matters involving legal, operational, financial and reputational risk
Participate in Legal Services Management Team strategic direction and contribute to modernization and process improvements
Represent the City in negotiations, mediations, hearings and proceedings; prepare reports and opinions for Council and Committees
Qualifications
LL.B. or J.D. and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible legal experience, including significant experience in planning, development and real estate law in municipal or public sector environment
Demonstrated experience leading, developing and managing professional teams in a complex, client-service-driven organization
Thorough knowledge of municipal planning, development and real estate law, including development approvals and growth-related matters affecting Ontario municipalities
Experience appearing before administrative tribunals including the Ontario Land Tribunal and directing complex litigation
