About this job
This is a temporary full-time 5-month Roads Maintainer position with the Region of Waterloo's Operations Programs (Transportation Services). The role involves general roads maintenance activities on regional roads, bridges, and roadsides, including winter snow plowing and ice control, and summer maintenance such as bridge washing, crack sealing, and drainage works.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs road maintenance activities such as crack sealing, bridge washing, shouldering, drainage works, and general maintenance/cleaning of infrastructure
- Installs culverts, constructs gabion walls and stream liners, performs excavation, ditching, drainage work, and landscaping
- Performs/assists with felling and removal of trees and brush; operates brush chipper, chainsaw, and loader
- Operates dump trucks, utility vehicles, and equipment (backhoe, skid steer, mini excavator, tar kettle, shouldering machine, water tanker) for snow plowing, salting, sanding, and material hauling
- Maintains vehicles, equipment, and hand tools; performs minor repairs; sets up traffic control; backs up lead hands as assigned
Qualifications
- Grade 12 education plus 2 years directly related roads maintenance experience, or Grade 10 education plus 3 years directly related experience
- Valid Class D driver's licence with Z endorsement and acceptable driving record
- Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual, health and safety, Highway Traffic Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Book 7
- Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans, safety notices, equipment manuals, and safety data sheets
- Successful completion of a physical demands test (pre-hire)
